If you’ve ever struggled with the concept of niching down, trust me—you’re not alone. For years, I heard every guru scream, “You gotta find your niche!” But what does that even mean? Every time I heard someone explain it, it felt vague, confusing, and honestly—kind of useless.

After 14 years of trial and error, I finally cracked the code. Today, I’m breaking it down in the simplest way possible so you can finally get unstuck and start building a business that actually works.

Why Niching Down Feels So Damn Hard

For most people, the struggle comes from one of two things:

  1. They have too many interests. If you’re a creative or entrepreneur, you probably have a laundry list of things you’re good at—so choosing just one feels like cutting off potential opportunities.
  2. They’re afraid of picking the wrong thing. What if you niche down too far? What if you pick something that doesn’t work? What if you box yourself in? The fear of making the wrong choice keeps people stuck in “generalist hell.”

I was there too. For years, I was the “I do everything” guy. Media production? Sure. Photography? Yep. Graphic design? Why not. Websites? Of course. I was trying to serve everyone, and in return, I got nowhere.

If that sounds familiar, you’re probably at the point where you know you need to niche down—but you’re terrified of making the wrong choice. Let’s fix that.

Breaking It Down: The Niche Pyramid

Level 1: The Market (Way Too Broad)

This is where most people start. It’s the big, vague industry you’re in. For example:

  • Fitness
  • Real Estate
  • Marketing
  • Media Production

At this level, you’re competing with literally millions of people. You have no differentiation, and clients don’t know why they should pick you over anyone else.

Level 2: The Submarket (Still Too Broad)

Now, we’re getting a little more specific:

  • Fitness → Weight loss coaching
  • Real Estate → Luxury real estate videography
  • Marketing → Facebook ads specialist
  • Media Production → Video editing

This is better, but you’re still competing with thousands of people. You might get some work, but it’s inconsistent, and the competition is brutal.

Level 3: The Niche (Now We’re Getting Somewhere)

Now, we break it down further:

  • Weight loss coaching → Weight loss for new moms
  • Luxury real estate videography → Social media reels for high-end real estate agents
  • Facebook ads specialist → Facebook ads for local dentists
  • Video editing → Editing fast-paced, TikTok-style videos for YouTubers

At this level, clients can instantly tell if you’re the right fit for them. If I’m a high-end real estate agent, and I see “I specialize in luxury real estate Instagram reels,” I’m hitting you up immediately.

Level 4: The Sub-Niche (Money Maker Mode)

Here’s where the big money is. You take your niche and specialize even further:

  • Weight loss for new moms → Helping new moms lose 20 pounds in 90 days using home workouts
  • Luxury real estate reels → Instagram reels that generate high-ticket leads for $1M+ properties
  • Facebook ads for local dentists → Running lead generation campaigns that bring 30+ new patients per month
  • TikTok-style video editing → Fast-turnaround, viral-style editing for finance YouTubers

This level makes you undeniable. You’re no longer “just another person” in your industry. You’re the go-to expert.

How to Find Your Niche (Without Picking the Wrong One)

The biggest mistake people make when niching down is picking something random that sounds profitable—but they don’t actually care about it.

(I made this mistake. In 2018, I launched a puppy jewelry brand for little girls. Why? Because some guru told me it was a “good niche.” I had zero interest in it. It flopped. I hated it. Lesson learned.)

Here’s the right way to niche down:

  1. List out all your skills. (Everything you’re good at—creative, technical, professional, personal.)
  2. Rate them based on three things:
    • Do you actually enjoy doing it?
    • Are you good at it?
    • Is there market demand (a.k.a. will people pay for it)?
  3. Cross off anything that doesn’t score at least a 7/10 in all three categories.
  4. Look for patterns. The things that remain are your real opportunities.
  5. Test it before committing 100%. Offer a few services, see what gets traction, and then go all in.

Common Niching Mistakes (That Will Keep You Broke)

1. Picking Something You Hate

If you don’t love the thing you’re doing, you’ll burn out. Fast.

2. Going Too Specific Too Soon

If you niche too far too quickly (“I do Instagram reels for dentists who only do root canals”), you might box yourself into a corner with no demand. Start broad and gradually narrow as you see what works.

3. Choosing a Niche Without Market Demand

You might be obsessed with hand-carved wooden spoons, but if no one is searching for them or willing to pay, you’re screwed. Make sure your niche is something people actually need.

What If You Are the Niche?

A lot of people ask, “But can’t I just be the niche? Can’t I just post about whatever I want?”

Yes—if you already have an audience.

But if you’re starting from zero, posting random content will confuse the algorithm and your viewers. If you post cooking videos, motivational rants, fitness updates, and business tips all on the same page, no one will know what to expect.

Solution: Start with one clear theme. Once you’ve built an audience, you can slowly introduce other content.

Final Thoughts: Stop Overthinking, Start Doing

At the end of the day, niching down is just about getting more specific.

  • Start broad. See what gets traction.
  • Slowly refine based on demand and your interests.
  • Let the market guide you.

The biggest mistake you can make is not picking anything at all. Stop waiting for the “perfect” niche. Choose something, test it, and adjust as you go.

That’s how you find your niche—and actually make money from it.
