Most people make one major mistake when creating content:
They take too long to get to the point.
They start with random backstory, too many details, and by the time they get to the good part, the viewer is already gone.
This is why most videos don’t perform well.
If you don’t hook your viewer within the first 3-5 seconds, they’ll scroll past.
But when you nail the structure, your content becomes addictive.
Let me break it down.
The Wrong Way to Tell a Story (And Why It Fails)
Let’s say you want to tell a story about how you made money as a teenager.
Here’s the wrong way to start the video:
❌ “When I was a high school kid, I used to hang out with a bunch of kids and skip class. I couldn’t really find a job because I was too young. I tried applying, but they said I needed work papers. One day, I realized I had this free MetroCard…”
🔹 Problem #1: It takes forever to get to the point.
🔹 Problem #2: The hook is weak—it doesn’t create curiosity.
🔹 Problem #3: The audience doesn’t know what to expect, so they lose interest.
By the time you finally say something interesting, the viewer is long gone.
The Right Way to Structure Your Story for Maximum Engagement
Here’s the winning formula for structuring a short-form story:
✅ 1. The Hook (First 3-5 Seconds) – Grab Attention Immediately
✅ 2. The Body – Build Curiosity & Relatability
✅ 3. The Payoff – Deliver the Promise
Let’s rewrite the same story the right way.
🎯 The Hook:
👉 “Unethical ways I made money as a broke teenager… (but not illegal).”
Why does this work?
- It’s specific. “Unethical” makes people curious.
- It creates tension. People want to know what you did.
- It makes a promise. Viewers expect real, valuable information by the end.
🔥 The viewer is now hooked—they need to know more.
🎯 The Body (The Build-Up & Problem)
👉 “When I was in high school, I was broke. I tried getting a job, but they said I was too young. I tried selling candy, but the school shut me down. Nothing was working.”
Why does this work?
- It’s relatable. Everyone remembers being a broke teenager.
- It builds curiosity. The viewer starts thinking, “Okay… so what did you do?”
- It keeps the video moving. No fluff, just key details.
🔥 At this point, the viewer is invested—they need the answer.
🎯 The Payoff (Deliver the Promise & Make It Memorable)
👉 “One day, I was at the subway, and this guy’s MetroCard wasn’t working. He asked if he could pay me $2 to swipe him in. I swiped him in with my FREE student MetroCard… and that’s when it hit me.
👉 I get THREE free swipes a day… which means I can make $6 a day… That’s a honey bun, an Arizona, and a slice of pizza—every day—without spending a dime.”
Why does this work?
- It delivers the promise. The viewer gets exactly what they expected.
- It’s visual. The “honey bun, Arizona, and pizza” line makes the story stick.
- It ends strong. The audience now has a clear takeaway.
🔥 At this point, you’ve kept them engaged from start to finish.
The Power of a Strong Hook & Why Most People Get It Wrong
The biggest problem? People don’t start with the hook.
Instead, they:
❌ Start rambling with no clear direction.
❌ Take too long to get to the good part.
❌ Don’t create curiosity upfront.
How do you fix it?
Before you record anything, figure out the reward.
Ask yourself:
✅ What is the “aha” moment in my story?
✅ What’s the one sentence that makes people curious?
✅ How can I start my video with that hook FIRST?
Example Hooks That Work:
🎯 “The easiest way I made money as a teenager (without a job)…”
🎯 “This side hustle made me $100/day in high school (without selling anything)…”
🎯 “I was broke until I figured out this one trick…”
Once you nail the hook, the rest of the video falls into place.
Final Recap: The Simple Content Structure That Works Every Time
📌 1. The Hook – Grab attention immediately.
📌 2. The Body – Build curiosity and relatability.
📌 3. The Payoff – Deliver the promise.
🚀 This is how you get people to stop scrolling and actually listen to what you have to say.
Now, go try this with your next video.
