If you’ve ever gone viral on Instagram, you know the high. The likes, the comments, the follower count shooting through the roof. It feels amazing. But let me tell you from firsthand experience—it can be a curse if you don’t get the right followers.
At the start of this year, I gained 15,000 followers in one week from a dumb challenge I did. For comparison, it took me six months to gain just 1,000 quality followers. Let that sink in.
At first, I thought, “Followers are followers, right? More people = more engagement, more views, more success.” Wrong.
The Problem With Viral Followers
The challenge that blew me up was a stair-step challenge—for every new follower, I’d walk up and down a flight of stairs. Sounds simple, but it was mentally and physically miserable. It was funny, it was engaging, and people loved watching me suffer.
But here’s where things went south. These viral followers only cared about that one challenge.
When I moved on to other content—weight loss, entrepreneurship, content creation—they disappeared. No engagement. No interaction. And some of them even started leaving negative comments:
- “Bro, what is this? Go back to the stairs.”
- “I don’t care about this, why are you posting it?”
They weren’t here for me. They were here for the one thing that made them hit follow. And once I stopped, they had no interest.
How Viral Followers Kill Your Algorithm
Here’s where things get even worse: they tanked my engagement.
Instagram sees who interacts with your content. When you have thousands of followers ignoring your posts, Instagram assumes:
- Your content isn’t good anymore.
- Your followers aren’t interested.
- Let’s stop pushing this to more people.
Boom. Shadowbanned by your own audience.
Meanwhile, my quality followers—the ones who had been with me since day one—still engaged. They didn’t care if I was doing weight loss, content strategy, or business tips. They liked me for me.
That’s the difference between viral followers and quality followers.
The Fix: Overpower the Algorithm
So how do you fix it? You post so much of what you actually enjoy that the viral crowd either converts or leaves.
Right now, I have about 17,000 followers. Out of those, maybe 2,000 are my true, die-hard fans. The rest? They’re dead weight.
So my strategy now is simple: flood my account with content I love making.
- Skits, content breakdowns, Instagram strategies.
- No more pandering to what “went viral.”
- Post so much that they either get on board or hit unfollow.
And I’m totally cool with them leaving. I’d rather have 5,000 engaged followers than 50,000 dead ones.
The Lesson: Focus on Quality From the Start
If you’re just starting out, I know it’s tempting to chase views, virality, and big numbers. But I promise you, that’s a trap.
What you actually need is to focus on creating content that truly resonates. Make people feel something. Make them relate to you. That’s how you build real fans.
I had people DMing me every time I posted a 75 Hard update, telling me, “Bro, this is my whole life right now.” That’s the kind of audience you want. People who see themselves in your content, who connect with your journey.
Final Thought
If you have zero traction, I get it—quality is harder to chase than viral growth. But trust me, building an engaged community is worth 100x more than empty numbers.
So forget vanity metrics. Create what you love, be real, and let the right people find you.
That’s how you win.
